What is Inkscape?

Inkscape is an advanced vector graphics editor with capabilities that are similar to Illustrator, CorelDraw, or Xara X. Inkscape uses the standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) format.

Vector graphics is a resolution-independent description of the actual shapes and objects that you see in the image. A rasterization engine uses this information to determine how to plot each line and curve at any resolution or zoom level.

This makes vector graphics especially great for print designs. You can scale your illustrations up and down without losing detail.
